Impact of Autonomous DER Functions on Centralized Voltage Optimization
Distributed energy resources (DER) can alter feeder power flows in ways that challenge traditional engineering. Interconnection rules and standards like IEEE 1547-2018 require DER to have autonomous grid support control capabilities, such as volt-var and volt-watt. While these functions can potentially improve DER integration, it is not well understood how they impact distribution voltage optimization (VO) schemes. This presentation evaluates the impact of autonomous DER functions on a feeder VO scheme. Static load flow and quasi-static time-series (QSTS) simulations are performed for a range of feeder load and PV penetration scenarios to assess the impact of widely-adopted DER grid support functions - constant power factor, volt-var, watt-var and volt-watt - on a VO scheme, which is set to flatten the feeder voltage profile. Feeder steady-state voltages, reactive power consumption, and other key metrics are assessed to compare feeder autonomous voltage regulation to an active VO scheme, both with and without smart inverter functions activated. The VO scheme is further evaluated with and without visibility to the operation of DER grid support functions. This research assesses the value of VO schemes on high penetration feeders. It also describes VO scheme requirements to monitor DER operation and to consider specific DER grid support function operation. Utilities will be better informed to select effective VO and DER settings to coordinate for desired feeder operating voltages.

How Smart Meters Can Be Used for Automation of Load Shedding During Emergency Weather Events, Load and DER Management and Beyond
During emergency events, such as the Texas 2021 February cold weather event, roll out of load shedding becomes necessary to avoid otherwise total system blackout. This can be extremely challenging with feeders that host critical loads, which results in uneven rollout execution where customers on other feeders may experience longer outages. It is feasible however to use smart meters to execute efficient and evenly distributed load shedding while excluding critical customers, but not without some improvements which this presentation addresses. The presenters also take us on a journey of enablement of utility-scale load and DER management initiatives.
