Lac-Mégantic and Hydro-Québec Microgrid: A Shared Vision of Energy Transition
The Town of Lac-Mégantic (LM) of Quebec, Canada suffered a catastrophic rail disaster in 2013 when a train full of oil derailed downtown. Following the disaster, LM formalized a vision to establish the Town as a smart city and create a “Living Lab” that would serve as a hub for technological and economic innovation. The utility, Hydro Québec (HQ), agreed to construct a microgrid in the downtown area to materialize their vision and develop the expertise required for a larger provincial energy transition. This presentation will provide an overview of the deployed solution, operational testing, and its contribution to LM and HQ's vision.

Gain a Competitive Edge by Selecting and Deploying Antennas for Smart Cities
Sponsored by Skywve Antennas

Many times, the antenna is not taken into consideration in the early stages of a systems deployment.  However, no piece of equipment has a more significant effect on the performance of a radio installation than the right antenna system. Whether your system needs, ISM, IOT, LTE, Ultra-Wide Band, 4G, and/or 5G radio systems, we will discuss the process in selecting and evaluating the proper antenna system required in today’s ever-increasing radio networks.  We will cover everything concerning your antenna system in a clear technical format. Learn about different antenna configurations and how they fit into your design. Discover how the efficiency, VSWR, and Return Loss is important. We will also discuss antenna patterns, Gain Measurements and much more.

Meeting the Infrastructure Needs of the Net-Zero Future
The always complicated process forced upon developers and builders of new energy projects gets more challenging and problematic every year. Financial constraints, regulatory hurdles, political pressures, and, last but not least, environmental goals are not always in alignment, so utilities and their EPC partners have hard rows to hoe in bringing those together. This session will look at how both utilities, system operators, and contractors navigate the building of the road to Destination 2050. This session will look at how the IOUs, IPPS, EPCs, and public power planners are using new architectural goals and methods to create the path to net-zero.

Leveraging Smart Streetlights to Transform Communities into Smart Cities
Cities and utilities across the world are embracing technology solutions to become smarter, safer, and more connected. One solution is a streetlight-mounted platform that enables cities to dim and schedule lights based on different requirements, and lower their streetlight energy consumption. The controller can act as a utility meter and provide customers with real-time reporting on power consumption and faulty streetlights, sending immediate notifications if it senses damage from a vehicle or storm, thereby ensuring a reliable and resilient energy grid. This session will explore technologies like this and several additional utility-centric innovations like how streetlights can be used to locate voltage sag/swells, identify “momentaries”, and discover stray voltage.
