UU 208: Utility Project Management – Methods for Success

Effective project management for electric, water, and gas utilities relies on superior implementation approaches, techniques, and skills. Implementation success for utility projects is not a given in our industry in general where as many as 80% of projects fail to meet their technical, cost, or schedule objectives. UU 203: Approach for Migrating the Evolution from a Smarter Utility to a Digital Utility

UU 205: IEEE 1547-2018 Interoperability: Accelerating DER Integration

The purpose of this course is to educate utility, regulator, and vendor decision-makers and implementers on the new IEEE 1547.1 Interoperability requirements (section 10 in IEEE 1547-2018); help the audience understand what is/is not included in certified UL 1741 SB products vis-à-vis interoperability; provide guidance on the implications of the new Interoperability requirement for utilities, regulators and vendors; and to suggest strategies for leveraging the game-changing inverter technology.      This course describes the fundamental challenges in integrating inverter-based DERs into grid operations and the significant changes being implemented by inverter vendors to enable more scalable interoperability between all systems in the Grid-DER management infrastructure.    The course is aimed at those decision-makers and implementers working on short-term and long-term strategic plans for scaling DER integration into grid operations.  The understanding and adoption of standard communications protocols for inverter-based communications are critical to success.  Who should attend this course? Leveraging Residential EVs for Grid Stability
California is leading the nation in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is at the heart of this growing trend with about one in five of the 1.9 million EVs in the US within their service territory. Since 2019, Opinion Dynamics has been working with PG&E to identify technologies to integrate into its existing residential automated demand response (ADR) programs. During this presentation, Opinion Dynamics will discuss its research to evaluate how EVs can be used to support grid resiliency both with current grid conditions as well as future scenarios. We will explore results from research on the charging behavior of over 130,000 EV customers. Our charging behavior analysis will include over seven years of data and segments EV customers into clusters based on their usage profiles, type of EV (battery electric vehicle vs. plug-in hybrid vehicle), utility rate plan (tiered rate vs time-of-use), and charging patterns. Results from this research will inform the theoretical potential to provide demand response at scale. The Town of Lac-Mégantic (LM) of Quebec, Canada suffered a catastrophic rail disaster in 2013 when a train full of oil derailed downtown. Following the disaster, LM formalized a vision to establish the Town as a smart city and create a “Living Lab” that would serve as a hub for technological and economic innovation. The utility, Hydro Québec (HQ), agreed to construct a microgrid in the downtown area to materialize their vision and develop the expertise required for a larger provincial energy transition. Field Area Networks based on IP over the radio with the bandwidth necessary to support multiple applications over a common radio infrastructure are now common in utility networks. IP-based SCADA products bring protocol, security, and management needs that drive expectations for radio system capacity and latency requirements with LTE and NB-IoT radio technology often seen as ideal. LTE systems both public and private, provide many of the characteristics required to address utility needs but care is needed in considering the actual applications that need to be supported. A zero trust architecture (ZTA) works by facilitating secure network access to resources (data, devices, and services) that are limited only to subjects (users, devices, and services) that are authorized and approved. It is built on an identity-centric approach based on the execution of policy-based authorization decisions in runtime combined with traditional defense-in-depth security principles. When implemented correctly, a ZTA mitigates both the risk of an external attacker getting a foothold in the network as well as the risk of lateral movement, in the case of a security breach The session will discuss recommendations to implement a ZTA in a smart grid using techniques like secure digital identities, secure transport, policy frameworks, and security monitoring.

In this session, Adam Sledd of DEIC and Michael Beiro of Linebird will discuss how the program creates value for both the utility and the startups.  They will cover how a startup can maximize its opportunity to quickly build customer relationships, and how the utility benefits from creating a formal framework to engage startup companies.

AMI Advances Natural Gas Distribution Safety and Security in New York City
In 2018, Consolidated Edison became the first natural gas utility in the U.S. to install IoT-enabled natural gas detectors in residences to better monitor and pro-actively enhance safety. These IoT-enabled sensors continuously monitor surrounding air levels for methane, automatically sending alerts to the utility and audible alarms to residents when leaks are discovered. Since the project was launched, the deployment of IoT-methane sensors has accelerated with successful results. This session will explain Con Ed’s program and explain how the utility leveraged its existing multi-application AMI mesh network to extend the value of those infrastructure investments.

The project is expected to open and/or help consolidate paths for alternative residential programs that use technology to provide more energy savings and increase customer satisfaction. For utilities, the project is expected to enable demand response and allow real-time metering.
