How to Improve Grid Resiliency by Connecting Analytics & Operations
Sponsored by Palantir

While Utilities’ information is dispersed across more complex and siloed data systems than ever before, there is a need to muster coordinated responses to new challenges, including changing weather patterns and the shift to renewables. Palantir has worked with several major utilities to deploy Foundry, an operations platform for big data. Foundry is designed to connect analysts and data scientists with operational planning and field teams. This session will discuss the key challenges and lessons learned from Palantir’s work in two case studies: Risk-based work planning: building feedback loops between risk models, work planning teams, and field crews for more intelligent work prioritization Asset investigations and failure analysis: synchronizing sensor data, GIS, and connectivity models to power more effective preventative maintenance systems These case studies exemplify how connecting analytics and operations in a closed feedback loop is critical for better grid resiliency and powering the connected utility of the future.

Life Before Cutover: Preparing for Running Your Legacy System in Parallel with ADMS
PG&E has embarked on a multi-year and multi-release ADMS implementation to transform its distribution operations, including replacing its legacy SCADA, FLISR, and fire mitigation applications. These three standalone systems and applications are currently operated by multiple user groups. Before ADM's cutover, PG&E needed a transition period where legacy systems would be fully maintained to properly transition operations and migrate data into ADMS. This presentation will explain the cutover strategy that PG&E employed and the different options that were considered. The database migration strategy and process and the alignment processes designed for maintaining legacy SCADA, FLISR, and DMS in parallel with ADMS will also be discussed.

Energy Innovation: Move the Needle for Real
“Innovation theater.” You know it when you see it, lots of sound and fury but the needle never moves. Proclaiming innovation and actually operationalizing it are two different things. The Utility of the Future does real innovation. It aligns innovation goals and aspirations with everyday realities. EPIcenter, a nonprofit organization that propels energy innovation and thought for our global future, will discuss what it takes to be truly innovative, how a utility’s internal culture has to evolve to support real innovation, and how regional collaboration among utilities can speed innovation in new ways. Hear real-world case studies, lessons learned, and what elements are needed to successfully build and support organizational innovation initiatives for the utility of the future.
