How Digitalization and Sustainability Are Critically Linked
Distributed generation and automated transactions are rapidly changing how we produce and consume electricity and offer alternative ways to deliver reliable and secure power, generated from various sources. This is driving new use cases for battery energy storage and microgrids―from remote regions not connected to the main grid and facing extreme conditions to urban areas with critical power reliability needs to locales and operators seeking to better manage EV charging.

At the same time, many digitalization efforts in energy are rooted by the adoption of renewable resources, as we actively try to decarbonize. This also drives increased complexity. Renewable resources are variable by nature and the grid needs new inertia and stability services to use the low-cost energy they provide. In the grid of tomorrow, data streams and an approach like AI can help us decide which actions to take. E-mobility infrastructure also requires advanced digitalization technologies to control, optimize and coordinate the vehicle charging process, including integration with battery energy storage systems and local Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).

Next Generation Security for Your OT and DER System
Our industry continues to work diligently to address cyber vulnerabilities for both the IT and OT infrastructures. However, securing OT and especially DER infrastructures brings unique challenges. Example challenges include securing serial links, managing security keys, addressing practical field installation/commissioning and minimizing attack vectors from unauthorized employees and sophisticated actors. In response, a respected utility, the DNP-UG, EPRI, the IEEE, and the IEC have collaborated to develop next generation security protocols that provide capabilities and benefits not found elsewhere inside or outside the electric power industry. The resulting work will be included in new and updated IEEE standards. This panel will provide an update on: SRP’s actions to improve operational cybersecurity. The next generation security layer (SAv6) enhancements including: A separate layer to enable securing of other protocols, Configurable encryption, A simplified installation and commissioning security process, Other enhancements. The new Authorization Management Protocol (AMP) including: A method to authorize communications between serial and IP connected devices including masters, Role-based access control for each pair of devices, Newly defined central authority. Plans for an EPRI sponsored industry plug-fest and rollout in 2022. Guidance on implementation including integration with SCADA, other operational security systems, and IT credential management systems. Coordination with IEC standards.
